SPRING 2026

Gorecki: Symphony of Sorrowful Songs

An extraordinary meditation on love, loss, and the unbreakable bond between mother and child.

Wild Arts presents Henryk Górecki’s Symphony No. 3, known as the “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs” – one of the most profoundly moving works of the twentieth century.

Performed by the Wild Arts Ensemble with solo soprano, and brought to life with dramatised elements from director Guido Martin-Brandis, this remarkable symphony explores grief, separation, and the enduring power of love.

About the Concert

Gorecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs

With text taken from a fifteenth-century lament of the Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross, a prayer scratched onto the wall of a Gestapo prison cell in 1944, and a Polish folk song recounting a mother’s grief, Górecki weaves three deeply human stories into a work of extraordinary emotional intensity.

After its chart-topping success in the UK in the 90s, Górecki reflected on its success:

“Perhaps people find something they need in this piece of music, something they were missing. Something, somewhere had been lost to them. I feel that I instinctively knew what they needed.”

The Wild Arts Ensemble

The associated orchestra of Wild Arts, the Wild Arts Ensemble specialises in re-orchestrations of the large symphonic repertoire, reflecting Wild Arts’ artistic focus on intimacy and musical storytelling.

Its arrangements offer a transparent view of the orchestra, drawing out individual voices and musical lines, and allowing each instrument and narrative line to be heard.

The ensemble brings together some of the UK’s leading musicians, at the forefront of a generation of players equally at home in modern and historically informed performance.
